Comparison - Samsung Galaxy S3 vs Sony Xperia Ion
11 May 2012 – The Samsung Galaxy S3 or Samsung Galaxy SIII was announced last week. The Sony Xperia Ion was announced during CES 2012 in January.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is obviously the successor to the very successful Galaxy S2, and we would think that Samsung has made another super phone for the Android OS.
They are both Android OS devices, but the Samsung comes to market with the latest Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) while the Sony is subject to an upgrade to its box version of Android 2.3.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a giant 4.8-inch screen, but the same number of pixels (720 x 1280) as the Xperia Ion and thus has lower resolution, although not by very much. It weighs a little less (133 vs 144g) and has a massive 1.4 GHz quad-core processor inside, almost double the raw processing power of the Ion.
It is also one of the first phones to start accepting 64GB microSD cards, so there is a lot of storage inside this device. There is also plenty more battery (2100 vs 1750 mAh) to drive the quad-core and the larger screen.
This is the first time that the Sony Xperia Ion has the smaller screen (4.55 vs 4.80-inches) in one of our comparisons. The Ion also has a better main camera rating (12.1 vs 8-megapixels).
The Sony Xperia Ion should be cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy S III. The main reasons for that would be more storage capacity and a better processor on the Samsung. However, the Ion is no slouch either, and I would think that it would still be a worthy purchase at two-thirds the price of the S3.

Samsung Galaxy S III

The Samsung Galaxy S III is the successor of the Galaxy S II that runs on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) with Samsung nature-inspired TouchWiz UI. It has a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display with 720 x 1280 resolution pixels, 1.4GHz Exynos quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM.
There is an 8-megapixel camera with LED flash that is capable of recording 1080p full HD video at 30fps and take photos simultaneously. It is also a quad-band device and supports HSPA+ (21Mbps), WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, energy efficient Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, GPS and GLONASS.

Sony Xperia Ion (no price yet)

The Sony Xperia Ion comes with Android 2.3 and comes packing a 4.55-inch 720p display, a 12-megapixel Exmor R primary camera that goes from standby to ready in 1.5 seconds, NFC and LTE – the first for Sony. There is a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU and 16GB flash storage.
Aside from the powerful specs, the chassis is ‘thin, lightweight and durable’ and the screen is augmented with Bravia Reality Display components, which was on the Xperia Arc last year and like the Xperia S has a laminated, gapless display. It too is Playstation-certified and the Android 4.0 upgrade is already planned.
